I haven’t been a pastor’s wife for very long, but long enough to know that being a pastor is one of the most unique opportunities and responsibilities out there. A pastor’s role ranges from the regular due diligence of preaching God’s Word week in and week out to maintaining all the daily church business to celebrating with couples on their wedding day and mourning and comforting congregants through some of the hardest days of their lives.
And let me be blunt, Satan hates pastors. These individuals are constantly pointing people to the throne of God, to redemption, and repentance, and the enemy is threatened to the core. We have experienced some bizarre stories ranging from coming home from vacation to no running water or hearing hateful criticism shortly after a huge ministry victory, but we’ve also heard of pastors burning out under ministry stress. Some were even asked to leave their position a couple months after the difficult loss of family members. As Christians and church members, we’re called to “have confidence and submit to those in authority so that their work may be a joy and not a burden,” (Hebrews 13:17). I think one of the greatest ways we can support those appointed by God to be pastors is to lift them up in prayer. In my journal, Thirty Prayers for My Pastor, you will find thirty days of prayer prompts to use as you pray for your pastor. Spend some time lifting them up, helping them be strong, and helping your church be steadfast on the work of the Lord.
